The Saugus High and Hart High girls soccer teams emerged from Tuesday afternoon’s game at Saugus High School with one bloody nose per team, but zero goals.

“We came in today just knowing that we had to hard work all throughout the game. “All 80 minutes,” Saugus coach Aly Drake said of the 0-0 tie in a Foothill League opener.

Hart’s attack in the first half was strong, and became even stronger after the break.

In the 11th minute of the second half, the Indians (12-2-2 overall, 0-0-1 in Foothill) had perhaps their best scoring chance when Izabel Reyes drove to the net and launched a shot that subsequently was grabbed and held by Cents goalkeeper Madalynn Moreno.

Three minutes later, Hart’s Taylor Moorehead followed with a shot from the left of the net that grazed the goal line, but never officially entered the net.

“I thought in the first half our delivery and presses were not good enough,” said Hart coach Guilherme Mitrovitch. “In the first half, we overthought things a little bit. The second half was much better. The ball just didn’t go in. (Moreno) made some really nice saves.”

The Cents (4-8-2, 0-0-1) matched the Indians’ physical tone and didn’t let up defensively. Moreno, a freshman, epitomized their efforts with seven saves in the game.

“I’m really happy and surprised with how I played,” Moreno said.

Fighting to a 0-0 result against the reigning league champs was a confidence-booster for the Centurions, but it was a wake-up call for the Indians.

“We had a very good preseason and maybe some people thought things were just going to happen,” Mitrovitch said. “I’m proud of the effort. It’s a marathon league. It’s ten games.”
