Terri Lovell: Abortion not progressive in Europe

When most people think of European social norms, they would assume that Europe’s abortion laws are at least as progressive as those of the United States.

After all, Progressives look to Europe as the ultimate example of progressive Western society and long for the day when America will adopt the enlightened ways of the Europeans.

Prager University has an excellent online video hosted by Elisha Krauss entitled “Who’s More Pro-Choice: Europe or America?” I was shocked to discover that Europeans have a much more conservative attitude about abortion than Progressives have here in America.

For example, in Germany it is illegal to get an abortion after 12 weeks, and legal abortions require a mandatory three-day waiting period and counseling for the woman.

In Belgium, abortions are permitted up until the 12th week, but the woman must wait six days after her first medical consultation before an abortion can be performed.

After the 12th week an abortion is only permissible if the mother’s life is in danger.

In Denmark, many restrictions on abortions kick in after the 12th week. In Finland, a woman must provide a compelling reason for seeking to end her pregnancy after 12 weeks.

France allows abortion on demand only up to 12 weeks.

Sweden allows abortions on demand up to 18 weeks and bans abortions after 22 weeks. In that time between the 18th and 22nd weeks, a woman must get approval by the National Board of Health and Welfare to have an abortion.

In the Netherlands, a woman seeking an abortion has to wait five days and attend a counseling session informing her of various options, including adoption. A minor under the age of 18 cannot have an abortion without the consent of her parents.

Interestingly, according to Krauss’ report, a major controversy erupted in Norway in 2014 after it was revealed that, since 2001, 17 babies had been aborted illegally after 22 weeks.

While Norwegians find it appalling that 17 babies were aborted after 22 weeks, American Progressives would find it appalling that Europeans do not share with them the same lust for innocent blood.

In every state in the U.S., abortions are legal before the 20th week of pregnancy. Only 11 states prohibit abortions after this time. Twenty states prohibit abortions at 23-25 weeks, the point of viability when a fetus can live outside the mother’s womb.

Three states prohibit abortions after the 28th week, and shockingly, seven states, including Washington, D.C., allow a baby to be aborted at any point in the pregnancy, even if the mother can safely give birth to a healthy baby.

I have never understood the left’s near-religious belief in demanding the “right” to unfettered abortion.

But after seeing the presentation, I became truly horrified at just how callous American Progressives are toward unborn babies.

Progressives display their inability to think in moral terms when they cite a non-existent “Constitutional right” to have an abortion, but refuse to tolerate the right for law-abiding citizens to own firearms. Is it because they are against murder? Apparently not.

Progressives will justify their cause for murdering an innocent by arguing that an unborn fetus is not a human being. If an unborn fetus is not a human being, then what, pray tell, is it?

By denying that a fetus is inherently human, Progressives give themselves the freedom to project anything they can imagine onto the unborn. So what is an unborn fetus, if not human? An amoeba? Or maybe an ape?

Anyone who has ever argued with a Progressive knows that their circular logic will eventually make your point for you. The very reason Progressives do not project another species onto a fetus is because they know a fetus is a human being.

If the fetus were an ape, they would fight to save it.

There are approximately 1.5 million unborn children aborted every year in the United States, and the left is proud. Is our society just going to continue to accept this barbaric behavior as normal? And to what end?

Why do American Progressives place so little value on unborn children, and what does this attitude say about American society?

I mean, think about it. What kind of a sick mind finds pride in murdering unborn children?

I will let an esteemed member of modern liberalism, Margaret Sanger, answer that in her own words: “The most merciful thing that a large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it.”
