The Canyon Cowboys survived a close game with the Highland High School Bulldogs, pulling out a 21-20 victory Friday night at Canyon High School.

The win would not have been possible without the heroics of senior Cole Manclow who, after Highland quarterback Derrach West found Jacob Freeman for a 12-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, blocked the extra point.

“I had one of my lineman hit one of their guards and it opened up a hole right to the kicker,” Manclow said. “You always get that rush of energy after every play you make, especially when it’s a big stop for your team.”

Highland’s strong running game propelled the Bulldogs to a 14-0 lead over the Cowboys, thanks to Ke’maje Tippins’ 19-yard touchdown run and D’andre Smith’s 26-yard TD run — which was aided by a Canyon facemask penalty on third-and-14 just one play earlier. The Cowboys committed seven penalties in total on the night.

Canyon responded with 21 unanswered points: a 1-yard touchdown run by Henry Arellano, a 6-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Miles Fallin to receiver Jake Gavin, and a 54-yard touchdown run by running back Brian Devereaux.

With less than four minutes left in the game, the Bulldogs brought the ball down to Canyon’s 36-yard line. On third-and-2, Manclow tackled Tippins, who ran for over 150 yards in the game, for a 4-yard loss, before Riley Ward sacked West on fourth down, sealing the win for the Cowboys.

“We had an enormous amount of penalties, and they hurt us at the wrong time,” said Canyon coach Rich Gutierrez. “A win is a win, but we have a lot of work to do.”

Canyon (3-1) will look to continue on its three game win-streak when they take on the Simi Valley Pioneers next Friday at Simi Valley High School at 7 p.m.
