Students in the William S. Hart Union District will be given information and direction from colleges and career programs across the nation this week.

The district will host its 6th annual College and Career Fair Sept. 22 at Golden Valley High School for its sophomore, junior and senior students.

“We have an obligation to prepare out students for the 21st century,” said Dave Caldwell, public relations officer for the Hart District.  “There is a push for career and college readiness and so we wanted to be able to introduce students to different college choices and options for post-secondary.”

The two-hour event, running from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., will feature more than 100 colleges and universities, career technical schools and apprenticeship programs.

It will also include two workshops about the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and one workshop about finding the perfect college, even if it is out-of-state.

Caldwell, having been a parent to children in college himself, believes the FAFSA workshop will be helpful due to the changes to the application form.

“The workshops are very interesting and would be good for people to consider,” Caldwell said.

Students will have a change to meet with representatives in an exhibit-style format to ask questions about admissions, classroom settings, campus life and financial aid.

The goal is to provide information and services that help prepare students to be college and career ready, and find the right avenue for them after high school.

“I have, just as recently as last week, heard from a parent that their child is now at a school they never considered or thought of it if wasn’t for this College and Career Fair,” Caldwell said.  “The fit was absolutely perfect for the student.”
