A motorist who drove into the back of a big rig near Castaic Friday afternoon was rushed to the hospital with head and facial injuries, emergency response officials said.

The traffic collision happened shortly before 1:40 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 just north of Parker Road when a grey Cadillac ran into the back of a big rig, California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Priessman told The Signal.

CHP received reports from motorists that the Cadillac was crushed in the collision.

Paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatched to the crash at 1:44 p.m. found no motorist in the Cadillac that sustained major front end damage, Fire Department Inspector Joey Marron said.

“The patient left the scene of the crash,” Marron said. “But paramedics caught up with him a short time later.”

Although it remains unclear how the injured man ended up in the car of another motorist, emergency response officials said they suspect someone stopped to help the injured man.

“Paramedics found the man in a stopped vehicle near Weldon Canyon Road,” Priessman said. “He had suffered facial injuries.”

Paramedics took to the patient to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital at 2:22 p.m., Marron said.

CHP officers are investigating the crash.
