Friends and family of Maria Acevedo, a Saugus woman murdered on Oct. 3, turned out in droves Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil held in her honor at Central Park.

Yellow was the primary color among the crowd as several of the attendees wore clothing in Acevedo’s favorite color.

The vigil started with prayers in Spanish and English as well as a speech from Father Tom Baker of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church.

“If we ask why she lived, look around,” he said in his speech.

“From what I heard, she was the rock and glue that held the family together.”

One such family member was Jeff Lucatero, Acevedo’s eldest son, who said it was only appropriate to hold the vigil at Central Park.

“It was her favorite place to walk in the park and we thought it was only right to do it here,” he said.

Acevedo was found dead in her home on Oct. 3 from stab wounds allegedly done by her son, Jesse Lucatero, who was booked on suspicion of murder.
