A butterfly-themed public art celebration was held at Central Park Saturday as a part of The City of Santa Clarita’s ARTober series, bringing community members to enjoy interactive art activities, folkloric dancing and live music.

“Today we’re celebrating national arts and humanities month, so we are highlighting our public arts,” said Donna Avila, City of Santa Clarita Arts and Events Coordinator.

Around 100 people attended the event which celebrated the public art installation, “The Western Tiger Swallowtail,” that resides at Central Park.

The Western Tiger Swallowtail, celebrated in Central Park Saturday, was created by artist LT Mustardseed of Los Angeles. It is constructed entirely of recycled steel parts and represents the insect which is typically seen in parks and gardens.

The celebration featured a performance from the Arroyo Seco Junior High School advanced band and dancers from the Newhall Community Center.

“(The dance) shows where we come from, our background and I’m really proud to be dancing,” said Cristina Canales, a dancer from The Advanced Ballet Folkorico at Newhall Community Center.

The event concluded with the distribution of 100 small envelopes containing live butterflies which the attendees released all at once.
