Fire forced a Valencia family of eight out of their home Monday morning, landing them in the care of the local American Red Cross.

Two adults and six children have been displaced by a fire that spread from the garage of their home on Palmetto Drive to the house, said one of the firefighters who helped battle the fire Monday.

“It extended into the house,” he said from Fire Station #111.

Firefighters were dispatched at 10:48 a.m. Monday to the 27000 block of north Palmetto Ridge Drive, north of Calvello Drive, for report of a structure fire, said Los Angeles County Fire Department spokeswoman Vanessa Lozano.

“There was smoke seen coming from a garage at that address,” she said.

It then spread from the garage to the home.

Firefighters arrived at the fire at 10:53 a.m. and spent an hour and half at the scene, extinguishing the fire and controlling it.  At one point they cut a hole in the garage roof to “vent” the fire.

“All occupants were out of the house,” Lozano said. “The Red Cross was called for the family of two adults and six children.

Melissa Harris, Disaster Program Specialist for the American Red Cross, said: “We responded to the fire on Palmetto and were able to provide recovery assistance to this family in need.”
