SANTA CLARITA – Opportunities for Learning (OFL) Santa Clarita Valley/Ventura Region assisted Habitat for Humanity Oct. 14 with building homes for veterans through the Enriched Neighborhood program in Santa Clarita.

Seven students and three staff joined the San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys chapter of Habitat in tasks such as painting, cleaning and sanding.  One of the students who participated actually lives in the community and her father is an inactive Marine who fought in Iraq, so this project hit close to this groups hearts.

Students at OFL are expected to be active members in their communities and community service hours are required for graduation.  OFL provides opportunities throughout the school year for students to earn hours.

Sean Mason, an OFL student in Santa Clarita said, “The time I spent helping at Habitat for Humanity was time well spent.  It felt good to help Veterans have a home so they can live a comfortable life after serving our country.”

Another Santa Clarita student, Parker Rasmussen added, “Overall, my experience at Habitat for Humanity was very positive.  We got to try many new things as well as, get a taste of what working in construction would be like.  I would definitely go back and do this again.”
