Several parks in Castaic, Stevenson Ranch and Val Verde will get facelifts under grants approved by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors.
The supervisors this week approved a resolution authorizing the county Department of Parks and Recreation to apply for, and receive, $5,635,000 in grants from the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District.
The grant money will go to various parks around the county. Locally, the funds would be used for:
* The Castaic Lake Recreation Area — $1 million to replace picnic shelters, fix restrooms and the parking lot.
* The Castaic Sports Complex jogging path — $143,000 to grade and replace about one mile of the path.
* Del Valle Park in Castaic — $185,000 for general improvements, including a new picnic shelter, new handicapped-accessible picnic tables, new barbecues, a shade structure for a play area, and path repairs.
* Jake Kuredjian Park Play Area in Stevenson Ranch — $250,000 to install a new play area with a shade structure, and to add a handicapped-friendly path.
* Dr. Richard Rioux Park Picnic Area in Stevenson Ranch — $550,000 for a new picnic shelter, plus adding handicapped-accessible picnic tables, adding new barbecues, fixing a path, and installing new perimeter fencing.
* Val Verde Park — $157,000 for general improvements, including a new handicapped-friendly path from the parking lot to the community center.
The supervisors approved the various improvements back in June – this was the money step.
A spokesman for Supervisor Michael Antonovich said, “These vital parks improvements will enhance the quality of life for residents in the Santa Clarita Valley.”
The Regional Park and Open Space District requires grant applications to go through the supervisors’ resolution process, but it’s really a technicality, as allocation of the funds is folded into the application process, the supervisors’ spokesman said.
