SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Saugus Union School District today announced the appointment of Isa De Armas, Ed.D. to the position of Assistant Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. De Armas, who has been in education for more than 30 years, has worked in the District for 20 years as a teacher, principal and – most recently – as Director of Curriculum and Instruction. The hiring was approved by the Governing Board at the October 18, 2016 meeting, with Dr. De Armas formally assuming the role immediately.
“Dr. De Armas is already a respected and beloved member of our community,” said Dr. Joan Lucid, Superintendent of SUSD. “We feel very fortunate to be able to elevate her to this position, allowing her to continue the great work she has been doing as Director for the last several years.”
The role of Assistant Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction is a Cabinet level position and is responsible for the management and coordination of curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional development in the schools and programs across the District. She will serve as the Chief Administrative Officer of Student Support Services, Information Technology, Child Development Programs and Instruction Departments.
As Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. De Armas was responsible for supervising the District’s Title I, II and III Federal and State programs, supervising the District’s English Learner programs and planning and implementing new instructional programs and professional development for teachers and administrators.
Prior to assuming her current role as Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. De Armas was a principal and assistant principal at several schools in the District. She began her SUSD career teaching at Helmers and Mountainview, as well as St. Patrick’s Elementary in Los Angeles.
“The work that Dr. De Armas has done for our District as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and Director, is exactly what this District needs as we continue to grow and build for the future,” added Judy Egan Umeck, President of the Governing Board of Trustees. “We are nurturing 21st Century learners and Dr. De Armas is a 21st Century educator.”
