A mobile home fire near the rural area of Fairmont north of the Santa Clarita Valley sparked a brush fire that burned nearly three acres.

The fire broke out shortly before 1:20 p.m. Wednesday in a mobile home fire just south of the Desert Pines Wildlife Sanctuary.

California Highway Patrol received reports from witnesses of smoke and flames seen in the area on Pine Canyon Road and Kings Canyon Road, between Neenach and Lake Hughes.

“Initially, this call started off as a mobile home fire and then spread to the brush,” Inspector Richard Licon of the Los Angeles County Fire Department told The Signal.

“Smoke from the brush fire was seen from five miles away,” he said.

Licon described the conditions faced by firefighters as fire moving slowly uphill by northern winds estimated at five miles per hour, across heavy brush.

By 1:51 p.m., firefighters had slowed the progress of the fire, he said.

Although the acreage burned by the fire was relatively small, the fire burned one mobile home, at least two vehicles and one structure with a steel frame, said photographer Jeff Zimmerman who photographed the firefighting efforts.

“One home was threatened for a short time as firefighters with both air and ground resources responded in force to quell the blaze,” he said.

“The fire took about an hour to control,” said Zimmerman, a former firefighter. “A large pine tree is down across power lines so I am sure some power is out in the canyon. It is unclear how the fire started. If we had strong winds in the area this could have been a very serious fire in the heavy forest fuels with very narrow access roads and little water resources.”

Licon said Southern California Edison was notified about the utility lines.
