Parents get to see their kids play instruments all the time. What they don’t get to see are the teachers of their kids.

That was the idea behind the Fall Fundraiser Faculty Concert put on by the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra (SCVYO) Saturday night at Little School of Music in Valencia.

“This is an opportunity for the parents to see what our faculty is capable of,” said Chuck Knight, the executive director of SCVYO.

SCVYO is a local youth orchestra that seeks to teach any child who wants to learn orchestral music. Some youth orchestras cost over $1,000 to join when SCVYO is a fraction of that.

“Our goal is really just training young musicians,” said Dr. Paul Sherman, the music director of SCVYO. “We’re actually the cheapest youth orchestra essentially out there.”

As of Sunday, SCVYO raised around $1,000 from the event and also received a $10,000 matching grant from the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation.

They have until May to reach that match so they could use the community’s help to get there.
