Santa Clarita Valley is part of Los Angeles County District 5 where Michael D. Antonovich has served as Supervisor since 1980.

And, since he’s being termed out of office, SCV residents qualified to vote Tuesday had to choose from one of two candidates running to take his place – Kathryn Barger or Darrell Park.

Barger, who served as Chief Deputy Supervisor to Antonovich for 15 years, will serve as his successor in the campaign.  As the final results were tallied, Barger took home 240,231 votes, or 58.92 percent, and Park took 167,524 votes, or 41.08 percent.

On election night, Barger gathered with supporters that were with her from day one to thank them for their work and watch the results roll in together.

“I came into today holding my head high because I’ve given it 110 percent,” Barger told the Signal late Tuesday night.

Park’s campaign said they were proud of the work they did and the statement the campaign made by gathering support from voters.

“We [are] proud of the grassroots campaign we built and the support we gained from the community as we took on the establishment,” said Jessica Perez, Park’s campaign manager.

During Barger’s campaign The Signal learned she had been Antonovich’s behind-the-scenes answer to thorny regional problems like the dispute last year between the Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District and Stevenson Ranch residents over a proposed deep well injection site on the West Side of the valley.

Antonovich has endorsed Barger to be his successor.

Park, on the other hand, served in the White House Office of Management and Budget under two presidents.

He holds a graduate degree in public policy from Georgetown University and is an advocate for clean energy, having published a book called “Better Than We Found It: Simple Solutions to Some of the World’s Toughest Problems.”

In late August, Barger and Park squared off in a debate hosted by Signal Multimedia at College of the Canyons.

Barger stressed the value of her experience for the position.

Park emphasized the importance of the district’s $30 billion budget and pointed to improper spending.

During the debate, they were asked about the prospect of a new sheriff’s station in the SCV.

Park said the district needs to change its approach to policing by making every sheriff a “community servant” and removing the abuse from within the system.

Barger, however, said that Santa Clarita’s single sheriff station is “bursting at the seams” and that there is a need to create a new station that serves all of the county’s needs as well as an annex.
