Mayor Bob Kellar had words written up in the event of a loss, instead he crumpled up that piece of paper and rode to yet another victory last night as he and Cameron Smyth clinched the two available seats on Santa Clarita City Council.

“I was honored and flattered to the votes needed for a win,” he told The Signal Wednesday morning.

“I felt I was in a pretty good position,” Kellar said, reflecting on his campaign. “I felt a degree of confidence going into it, but I had words prepared if I was not successful.”

Kellar emerged from the 2016 election with 21,965 votes representing at least 25 percent of votes cast in the race.

Smyth garnered 20,755 votes for about another quarter share of the votes cast.

“We’re really happy,” Smyth said Wednesday morning, referring to he and his family.

“When I look at the direction the city is going – its transitioning into a larger city – the time was right to run and make sure issues are addressed.”

Smyth said he’s happy to have a run a relatively clean campaign – relative to some of the larger races underway in the SCV.

“What I’m most pleased about is having a run a really successful campaign based on a positive message about my vision for the city.

Incumbent councilman TimBen Boydston failed to win enough votes to stay on the council. Boydston came in with 11,710 votes at 13.6% in the 11-person race for the two seats on the council.
