The William S. Hart Union School District Governing Board will hear a report on student achievement from Hart High School and a presentation on the district’s College Readiness Block Grant Expenditure Plan during its regular meeting Wednesday.
Hart High School Report
Hart High School Principal Collyn Nielson will present information on the school’s progress reaching its achievement goals for the schoolyear.
The high school’s goal is to increase student achievement in the subgroups of English Learners (EL), Long-term English Learners (LTEL) and Socioeconomically Disadvantaged (SED) through “differentiation and academic intervention.
According to board documents, by the end of 2016-17 Hart High School will have closed the achievement gap between school and subgroups by 5 percent, as measured by CAASPP Math and English proficiency scores.
To continue this reduction of the achievement gap, the school is focusing on training staff on differentiation strategies, targeted intervention in math and English, continuation of the LTEL support program and one-on-one mentoring between staff and students.
Hart High School is also creating micro-documentaries of EL and LTEL students in their own words.
College Readiness Block Grant Expenditure Plan
College Readiness Block Grants are state issuances of one-time funds to increase the number of students who enroll in higher education and complete an undergraduate degree in four years.
The funds are specifically meant to serve “unduplicated pupils,” or English learners, economically disadvantaged or foster youth.
Block grants are issued based on the on California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System, which allocates $149 per unduplicated pupil for students in grades 9 to 12.
In the Hart District, there are an estimated 3,572 unduplicated pupils resulting in a district estimated allocation of $533,370 in grant funds, according to the board agenda.
These funds will be used during the next two school years, until June30, 2019, to fund college readiness programs and opportunities within the district.
According the district’s expenditure plan, the grant will be used to fund Advanced Placement exam fees for unduplicated pupils, to support and maintain College of the Canyon’s Career Coach program and for professional development for staff relating to college readiness.
COC’s Career Coach Program is grant-funded at all but three of the district’s high schools.
The grant will support the extension of the program to the final three schools, Hart High School, Bowman High School and West Ranch High School, who are currently ineligible due to requirements of the COC grant.
These measures fulfill the district’s LCAP 3 which discusses increasing graduation rates and the number of students prepared for college and careers.
The final expenditure plan for the grants will be presented to the Governing Board for approval at its December meeting.
