Middle school, high school and college-aged students will have the chance to learn about the potential of Green STEM careers during College of the Canyon’s annual Green STEM Summit Saturday.

The summit, hosted by COC and the Santa Clarita Environmental Education Consortium (SCEEC), will feature panel discussions, speed mentoring, a keynote address and a poster competition.

Keynote speakers will include Dr. Jerry Buckley, assistant superintendent and vice president of instruction at COC, and Michael Haro, environmental engineer at Lockheed Martin.

“The idea is how to navigate your own green career path so the topics are pretty broad,” said Eric Harnish, COC’s vice president of public information, advocacy and external relations.  “Each person will talk about their own experiences, how they got involved, what led them to today and what their future plans are.”

Students will have the chance to speak with more than 25 mentors from organizations and companies like Valencia Water Company, Boise Paper, City of Santa Clarita, CBS, Disney Corporate and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Representatives from 13 colleges and universities throughout California, Arizona and Oregon will also be present to showcase their environmental programs, degree offerings and current areas of research.

“This is our fourth annual Green STEM Summit with a focus on careers in environmental sustainability,” said Jia-Yi Cheng-Levine, SCEEC member and director of International Services and Programs at COC, in a statement. “I believe many inspirational stories of mentoring will come out of this conference.”

COC said the event usually draws about 200 to 300 people each year.

“I think there is a growing interest in green careers,” Harnish said.  “We’re hopeful this enables students to take the next step and move forward.”

The summit, which is free and open to the public, will be held at COC’s Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
