No Foothill League girls tennis players advanced through the first day of the CIF-Southern Section individual sectionals on Monday.
That’s not to say the league’s young players didn’t have success. They just couldn’t get past the third and final round of the day.
Valencia sophomore Amanda Tabanera and West Ranch freshman Jordyn McBride each lost in the third round at The Cate School in Carpinteria.
Doubles competition was held at Carpinteria High.
Tabanera cruised through the first round (6-0, 6-0), survived a second-round tiebreaker against the No. 2 overall seed from Ventura’s Buena High (6-3, 3-6, 10-7) and finally faced Rachel Wagner of Campbell Hall.
There the Foothill League individual tournament singles champion lost 4-6, 6-4, 5-10. Last year, Tabanera advanced to the Round of 16 in doubles with Jennifer Shin as her partner.
Jordyn McBride, who Tabanera beat in the league singles final late last month, beat Katie Tavasoli of Westlake, 6-3, 6-1, and Sasha Kleinman of Milken Community, 6-0, 6-0, before falling to No. 1 seed Delanie Dunkle of Arroyo Grande.
Dunkle won the match 6-1, 6-0.
“It was a good experience for (Jordyn) to play Delanie,” West Ranch coach Dina McBride said of her daughter. “She knows what she has to do to go to that next level.”
The Wildcats won their first Foothill League title since 2011 this season behind a deep lineup of singles and doubles. That depth was on display Monday.
West Ranch doubles Brittany Waugh and Dani Hettinger beat a team from Marymount in the first round before losing in a tiebreaker to Cate’s Carol Cai and Jackie Cai, the No. 2 seed, in the second round.
The Wildcat pairing of Quinterra Walter-Eze and Cori Raffish, the Foothill doubles champions, drew a tough first-round match and fell to a Marlborough team.
