Wednesday’s Santa Clarita Community College District’s Board of Trustees meeting, which governs College of the Canyons (COC), will mark the end of an era and the start of a new one.

The meeting will be Board President Bruce Fortine’s last, as he was unseated in Nov. 8’s election by Edel Alonso, an educator and school counselor who worked with COC during the last 15 years.

Fortine is a founding member of the Santa Clarita Community College District’s Board of Trustees, being elected to the position in 1967.  He briefly stepped away from his board position to work for COC before returning to the board in 1991.

Under his leadership, COC added a second campus in Canyon Country, the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center and the Dr. Dianne Van Hook University Center, as well as additional educational and training programs for the college.

Returning and new board members will also take their oath of office at Wednesday’s meeting before electing members to the officer positions of president, vice president, clerk and secretary-parliamentarian for 2017.

The board is also slated to approve the 2017-2018 Budget Parameters for the college which determine the framework for COC’s yearly budget.

Members of the President’s Advisory Council on Budget (PAC-B) and the Executive Cabinet reviewed and updated the Budget Parameters at individual meetings Oct. 10, Nov. 15, Nov. 21 and Nov. 22 before submitting it to the board for approval.

The main changes to the parameters are the language clarification and addition of elements in the Enrollment Management, Instruction/Curriculum, “Doing What Matters,” Other Funding Sources and Career Pathways, Accreditation and Budget Flexibility sections.

n Presentation from the LEAP Project on COC’s MakerSpace, a project to engage students and community members in STEM-related and integrated projects in innovative learning environment
