Classical singers ranging from the ages of 17 to 80 came together over the weekend to sing traditional holiday choral music at College of the Canyons.

On Saturday, around 70 students performed in Christmas Tapestry which included the vocal ensembles, Chamber Singers and Voices of the Canyons.

“We got our music in September and we practiced for 16 weeks,” Jesus Zavala said, who sang bass during the performance.

The evening was led by Lori Marie Rios, the associate director of vocal music at COC. She helped organized the event as well as conducted the music for the evening.

“I have the greatest gig in the world. I get to come to work everyday and make music with people,” said Rios.

“It is so great to see people to come together and produce something.”

Sharolyn Fullmer attends performances of choral music regularly because of how “listenable” the voices are compared to what many people may be playing on their car radios.

“The setting was just so lovely and it just moved around in such a beautiful way,” Fullmer said, referring to her favorite song of the evening. “I almost had tears in my eyes.”

Fullmer said that she took pleasure in seeing so many young people interested in this genre of music.

“Some people are shocked with I say that I’m a classically trained singer. They don’t expect that from me.” said Zavala.

“You definitely make some great connections with people, no matter how old they are or how young they are.”

The 250 people who attended were charged admission and the proceeds from the event will be going towards the COC choral music department.

“Music is a huge part of life, at least in mine,” said Fullmer. “I think that the people who wouldn’t agree are missing out on a whole lot.”
