Members of the Sulphur Springs Union School District Governing Board will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Sulphur Springs Community School to conduct their first board meeting of the year.

In its conference calendar, the board will carry out a first reading of a job description and salary schedule for a licensed vocational nurse position to serve the entire district.

The board will also conduct a first reading of two board policies and administrative regulations: Tobacco and Tobacco-Free Schools.

Board members will review and approve a Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators to include an additional Emergency English Learner Permit.  This will amend the “insufficient number of certificated persons” for the district’s employment criteria for this position.

During the meeting, the district will publically invite all parents, staff and administrators to the Sulphur Springs Union School District Conference held Feb. 3 at Canyon Springs Community School from 3:45 to 6:30 p.m.

According to an invitation, the theme for the conference is “No Time Like the Present to Build a Better Future.”

The meeting is shaped to be a relatively calm one compared to the board’s last regular meeting of the year Dec. 7 when it denied Eagle Collegiate Academy’s charter petition.

According to meeting minutes, the board denied the charter’s petition because it was “not consistent with sound educational practices.”

District personnel stated that the charter’s petition failed to provide adequate signatures, failed to provide “reasonably comprehensive description of essential charter elements” and reflected the idea that the “petitioners are demonstrably unlikely to successfully implement program presented in petition.”

Four public attendees spoke against the charter school’s denial; however, the Sulphur Springs Union School District Governing Board voted unanimously against the petition in a 5-0 vote.
