While over 100 people addressed the Los Angeles County Planning Commission at the Chiquita Canyon Landfill public hearing Wednesday night, time ran out before everyone got a chance to speak.

To accommodate everyone, the commission will be holding a follow up public hearing on the morning of April 19 in downtown Los Angeles with a livestream in Santa Clarita.

“We encourage all those who signed up to come down, particularly those who signed up to speak and did not get a chance,” L.A. County Planning Department Director Richard Bruckner said. “Before the commission starts to deliberate, they want to hear from them all.”

The second hearing will be held during the Planning Department’s regular Wednesday morning meeting when they have other matters to attend to, hence the location change to L.A. Bruckner said.

The testimonies of people who attend the hearing in L.A. will not have an advantage to those who speak at the Santa Clarita livestream, he said.

After the public hearing, the planning commission will decide whether to accept, or make changes to, the planning department’s recommendation.

Once the commission makes their decision, both the community and Chiquita Canyon can appeal to the Board of Supervisors if they do not agree with the outcome.

“We are prepared for a decision the 19th, but that’s the commission’s choice, not ours,” Bruckner said.

Principal Regional Planning Assistant Richard Claghorn said he believes the commission’s next step after the hearing will weigh on what happens leading up to the day of decision.

“They could approve it, they could deny it, they could continue it to another date, depending what happens between now and then,” Claghorn said.

The public hearing will be held at 9 a.m. at 320 W. Temple Street in Suite 150. The Santa Clarita location will be determined within the next week.
