After the weekend, officials with the city of Santa Clarita are expected to recommend the person they want as the next captain of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The process to find a replacement for Captain Roosevelt Johnson, who last month was promoted to rank of commander, got underway in earnest this past week as city officials interviewed at least a couple of candidates for SCV’s top cop job.

“We hope early next week to announce who the captain will be,” Santa Clarita’s City Manager Ken Striplin told The Signal Friday.

“We have interviewed a couple of people,” he said, declining to confirm that one of the short-list contenders is a local man.

Santa Clarita contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to police the Santa Clarita Valley.

When a new captain is appointed to head up a contract city’s station, the Sheriff’s Department identifies a list of candidates for consideration by both the county and the contract city.

Both the city of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles County 5th District get to recommend a person from the list of candidates, Striplin told The Signal Friday.

He would not name the candidates or the candidate chosen by city officials.

Three years ago, Johnson took over from the retiring Capt. Paul Becker who served as captain since he was appointed to the job in March 2010.

And, before Becker was named Captain, it was Cmdr. Anthony LaBerge who was in charge of the SCV Sheriff’s Station.
