A Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputy was injured and taken to the hospital shortly before noon Friday after a woman slashed him in the neck with a bottle.

The incident happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. Friday, at a location between Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and Meadows Elementary School, near Orchard Village Road.

“We’ve taken a female into custody near the school,” Lt. James Duran told The Signal.

“She was walking in traffic and when the deputy approached, she slashed him in the neck with a bottle,” he said.

Information as to whether or not the bottle was broken was not disclosed.

Although there is no official word on the condition of the injured deputy, Duran said: “He appears to be OK. He went to the hospital.”

Coincidently, at the same time as the assault, at least five deputies were at Meadows Elementary School helping school staffers carry out a scheduled lockdown drill, said Paul Cordeiro, superintendent of the Newhall Elementary School District.

The assault and the lockdown were not related.

“We take the security of our students seriously,” Cordeiro said, noting each of the district’s schools is scheduled to undergo the same lockdown drill.
