If you answered, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” with “city parks commissioner,” the city of Santa Clarita may make your dreams come true.

The city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission is now taking applications for a recently open commissioner position.

“If you love the outdoors and recreation and what it does for the Santa Clarita Valley, the Parks Commission is a wonderful place to serve,” Councilwoman Laurene Weste said.

The commission serves to advise the city council on matters related to city park facilities, recreational offerings, classes and programs. Often, the commission addresses issues concerning the maintenance and expansion of park facilities, the development of trails and open space and the provision of educational programs.

“We are looking for a community member who loves our city and the incredible recreational activities that our environment and city amenities afford us,” Mayor Cameron Smyth said. “The groundwork has been laid to continue expanding our trails system, add new park facilities and secure more open space. We need someone who is willing to support these goals and ensure that these recreational opportunities are available to future generations.”

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and must live primarily in the city of Santa Clarita during their term.

The commissioner will attend several meetings a month for which there is a small stipend. The term for the position will expire on Dec. 31, 2018.

Applications, along with three letters of recommendation, are available at the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall and on the city’s website. Commissioner applications and letters of recommendation are due to the City Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. on April 3.
