For the third year, 15-year-old Morelia Robles is working to make Easter extra memorable for patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Through her organization Bunnies Who Care, Robles donates baskets full of stuffed bunnies, art supplies, coloring books, toys and card games to hundreds of children at the hospital.
“I created Bunnies who Care to remind them [patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles] that people care about them and are thinking about them,” Robles said.
The Saugus High School sophomore first had the idea to create the organization when she realized that some children do not have the ability or opportunity to spend the Easter holiday with their families.
“My family has always been involved in the community and we would also gather together at every holiday. Easter was very memorable because we would get together and go to the park,” she said. “I realized that not everyone gets that opportunity to spend time with their families like I do.”
In the past two years, Robles has raised enough money to cover the cost for more than 200 baskets for newborns, toddlers, children and teens.
“I do newborn baskets where I put rattles and different toys and baby bibs and clothes,” she said. “For kids I put in coloring books and art supplies and toys. For teens I put in art supplies and journals and card games.”
This year, teen girls will also receive makeup from Mary Kay which an individual donated to Bunnies Who Care.
“They’re always excited,” Robles said. “The second year I came in they said, ‘Oh the baskets, they love them so much.’”
To create each basket, Robles accepts donations from community members to purchase bunnies, supplies and gifts. Each basket costs $10 to make.
“There is no specific amount I would ask each person to donate,” she said. “My goal this year is to raise enough for at least 300 baskets.”
Robles plans on giving the completed baskets to the Children’s Hospital on Easter Day, April 16.
