I have been a resident of the Santa Clarita Valley for 18 years.  My family moved here from the San Fernando Valley when I was in high school. Since moving here I have seen our community blossom and expand. I have had different experiences in the community that have aided in the shaping of who I am today.

I am a College of The Canyons graduate. I have my A.A. in American Sign Language Interpreting and have many units in Early Childhood Education. I have been working with children for 17 years. Life has taken me to different fields of work in that time, but I always seem to gravitate back to young children. I have worked as a Gymboree teacher, an ASL interpreter for the Sulfur Springs District, and even as a manicurist in the Santa Clarita Valley. But my heart belongs to young children. It brings me such joy to be with children in their formidable years, watching them grow and learn. For the last 5 and half years I have been working with infants and toddlers as the Lead Toddler Teacher in Castaic in a preschool setting. It’s the best job ever!

Over the last 17 years I have read many books to the children I have worked with, ranging from texture books to chapter books to Dr. Seuss books. Watching their reactions to different stories of morals, values, and humor, I was inspired to write a children’s book myself. I used my own experiences as an older sister, I have a sister and brother, to write a story I knew would resonate with children everywhere.

My book is called Big Sister Knows Best. It’s a story about an older sister, Annie, helping her younger sister, Ellie, get dressed and ready for the day while their mom is tending to their baby brother. As the sisters start their day, Annie reminds Ellie of steps she has forgotten and corrects her mistakes using the phrase “trust me I know, big sister knows best”.

Big Sister Knows Best will be featured at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on April 22nd and 23rd at USC (https://events.latimes.com/festivalofbooks/the-festival/info/).
