In an effort to protect military members from sexual harassment, Congressman Steve Knight cosponsored legislation to prevent people in the military from sharing one another’s private photos.
This piece of legislation comes after the “Marines United” Facebook page scandal, where members shared personal information and intimate photos of women.
“Sexual harassment and abuse should always be condemned as it is harmful for its victims, and in this case a national security concern that threatens the capabilities of our forces,” Knight said in a meeting with the Marine Corps general. “We must adopt policies to hold the perpetrators responsible and stop this from happening now.”
The PRIVATE Act, which stands for Protecting the Rights of IndiViduals Against Technological Exploitation, is authored by Congresswoman Martha McSally (AZ-2).
“I thank Representative McSally for her leadership on this issue and I am eager to solve this disgraceful problem,” he said.
This would strengthen and clarify the Uniform Code of Military Justice, allowing flexibility to discipline military members who commit these crimes, Knight’s office said in a statement.
“When service members betray the trust of one another, it violates the rights of their fellow troops and destroys the unit cohesion that makes our armed forces the finest in the world,” Knight said.
