Santa Clarita is expected to be taking care of business in the coming years, as Financial Times Magazine ranked the city as fourth on their list of Small American Cities of the Future.

The city was compared to more than 200 cities in North America in the fDi American Cities of the Future 2017-18 assessment, taking into consideration economic potential, business friendliness, cost effectiveness, connectivity, human capital and lifestyle.

Mayor Cameron Smyth said in a statement that the recognition was an honor.

“The city prioritizes offering a healthy business environment and outstanding business partnerships in the community,” Smyth said in the statement. “The American City of the Future award shows that Santa Clarita is a great place to do business.”

With more than 6,000 businesses citywide, Santa Clarita was named Los Angeles County’s most business-friendly city in 2016, Santa Clarita Communications Manager Carrie Lujan said.

“This award is a testament to the work our city puts into being business friendly,” Lujan said. “The City of Santa Clarita consistently ranks as one of the top retail markets in California.  Some of the most successful entertainment, biomedical, technology, manufacturing, lifestyle and aerospace companies are based in our city.”

First place for Small American Cities of the Future went to Kingston, Ontario, with Oshawa, Ontario and Mobile, Alabama as second and third. Fifth through tenth places were Lafayette, Louisiana; Spokane, Washington; Lexington, Kentucky; Frisco, Texas; Richardson, Texas; and Richmond, British Columbia.

New York City, New York was honored as the top overall American City of the Future.
