It is apparent that the number of local shootings is increasing lately.

When I read about these incidents, I am left to wonder one thing: Do any of these perpetrators legally own their guns?

Are they registered gun owners? Or perhaps they obtained the weapons through illegal means?

Gun control is a hot topic currently. It would be nice to know.

Thank you.

Great question. Some of the most violent areas of shootings are in states with the most strict gun laws.

    An excellent point, Ms. Coe.

I haven’t noted the delineation between lawful and unlawful possession of firearms in our local reporting. It’s certainly relevant in discussions of prosecution and policy.

Here’s an example of a news story that provides relevant information:

“It’s too soon to say whether Muhammad, who was homeless, had ties to any militant groups or causes, Dyer said. Muhammad has a criminal history that includes arrests on weapons, drugs and false imprisonment charges and making terrorist threats, police say. He had been associated with gangs but was not a validated member.”
