A Chatsworth man who allegedly rammed a California Highway Patrol Officer twice on Interstate-5 as he drove the wrong way along the freeway was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of assault and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury.
Stanley William Gray, who turned 60 years old last week, was arrested on suspicion of assault and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury.
The incident began shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when horrified motorists traveling in the northbound lanes of I-5 reported seeing a 2006 Chevy HHR traveling towards them on the interstate.
“The CHP began receiving reports of a wrong way driver reported to be driving southbound in the northbound lanes of the I-5 – Golden State Freeway – from the Castaic Commercial Vehicle Inspection Facility,” CHP Officer Josh Greengard said in a news release issued about the event.
“Several additional witnesses reported the wrong way vehicle, identified as a blue Chevy HHR, as it traveled from Magic Mountain Parkway to Calgrove Boulevard,” he said.
A CHP officer responded to the area from Highway 14.
“The CHP officer established a traffic break slowing all northbound traffic as he approached Calgrove Boulevard and located the wrong way Chevy approaching his location,” Greengard said in his release.
“The officer positioned his patrol vehicle in the direct path of the Chevy causing the vehicle to slow.
“The driver of the Chevy continued at a slow rate of speed towards the front of the patrol vehicle and rammed into its front bumper,” Greengard said.
“The suspect driver reversed his vehicle and attempted to drive around the patrol vehicle to flee the scene.
“The officer again positioned his patrol vehicle in the path of the Chevy and was rammed a second time by the Chevy,” Greengard said.
The Chevy was stopped and the driver was taken into custody.
The CHP officer who tried to stop the motorist suffered minor injuries from the incident and was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.
Alcohol is being investigated as being a factor in this incident, Greengard said.
