A crash involving two big rigs in Castaic resulted in an oil spill in the slow lane of Interstate 5, shutting down that lane for at least two hours.
The crash happened about 1:30 p.m. Monday in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 at Parker Road.
Hours later, cleanup crews were still working on the slow lane of I-5 at 6 p.m., Inspector Melanie Flores, of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.
One of the big rigs jack-knifed and began leaking fuel, California Highway Patrol Officer Josh Greengard told The Signal shortly after the crash happened.
“We did have some injuries but I do not know yet the extent of those injuries,” he said.
“Two big rigs collided. One of them jack-knifed,” Greengard said. “The spill is 100 yards long and six feet wide in the number four (slow) lane.”
As a result, CHP have diverted traffic off of the slow lane and closed the Parker Road off ramp.
“People wanting to exit at Parker should exit at Hasley Canyon Road or Lake Hughes Road,” Greengard said.
Caltrans crews were called to the scene.
As well, specially-trained firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Health Hazardous Materials unit were also called to respond. They were expected to arrive at the spill sometime before 3 p.m., a Fire Department spokesman said.
It was unclear from both the CHP and the Fire Department what type of fuel was spilled.
