A sheared fire hydrant sent a column of water shooting into the air in Saugus Wednesday, wasting about 200,000 gallons.

“We estimate approximately 200,000 gallons could have been lost in this incident,” Keith Abercrombie, retail manager for the Santa Clarita Water Division told The Signal late Wednesday afternoon.

The hydrant was hit shortly before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday by a vehicle on Ruether Avenue between Soledad and Santa Clara Streets, north of Soledad Canyon Road.

Firefighters were dispatched to the water breach at 3:30 p.m. and spent 15 minutes trying to shut the water off.

“This was for a vehicle into a hydrant,” a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department told The Signal.

Officials with the Santa Clarita Water Division were called about the incident, he said.

They were asked how much water was wasted in the mishap and, at 4:10 p.m., were still assessing the situation.
