California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) was among dozens of nonprofit entertainment organizations, foundations and scholarship organizations who received more than $2.8 million from the the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
The HFPA, known for hosting the Golden Globe Awards, officially presented funds to recipients at its annual Grants Banquets at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.
CalArts received more than $100,000 from HFPA, when it was awarded $60,000 for fellowships and institute support, $12,500 for HFPA scholarships/endowments and $31,104 in equipment grants.
“This grant from the HFPA will support various fellowships for up to 10 top ranked undergraduate students that will help them study dramatic narrative, experimental live action and, something quite dear to me, character-based animation,” actor Chadwick Boseman said before presenting a CalArts video at the banquet.
Through its philanthropic efforts and its Charitable Trust, the HFPA provides financial support for educational and cultural non-profit organizations whose primary focus is the entertainment industry.
During the past 27 years, the HFPA Trust has awarded more than $21.6 million in fellowships and grants to film schools, film preservation and charitable organizations, according to the HFPA website.
In a CalArts video about the HFPA Chartible Trust, CalArts students shared how the funding helped them grow, meet fellow artists, be inspired, work on new computers and explore new programs.
“The idea of CalArts, the idea of all those people learning something so vitally important… [and] something that will be a career for them all their lives, I love it,” comic-book writer, editor and publisher Stan Lee said at the banquet.
Other institutions of higher education that received grant funding included Los Angeles City College, New York University, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Northridge, among others.
CSUN received a total of $65,000 in grants with $60,000 for fellowships and institute support and $5,000 for HFPA scholarships/endowments.
Additional grants were awarded for professional training and mentoring, pre-professional education and mentoring, preserving the culture and history of film, promoting cultural exchange through film, special projects and 2017 new grantees.
