The Sulphur Springs Union School District Governing Board are expected to discuss changes to the district’s budget, additional district grants and last year’s instructional services during its meeting Wednesday.

Following the adoption of the California State Budget, the Sulphur Springs District has 45 days to make revisions to its own adopted budget.

A major change is the decrease in one-time Average Daily Attendance Funds from $170 to $147.

Additional changes include a decrease in Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) funding in 2018-19 and 2019-20, updates to reflect actual enrollment and staff changes to support actual enrollment.

The Governing Board is also expected to approve two grants for its programs.

The first is a Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) State Preschool Grant for Canyon Springs State Preschool and Mint Canyon State Preschool at $6,000 and $4,000, respectively.

According to the district, the grant money will be used to provide professional development for preschool staff and purchase classroom materials that support the professional development and preschool foundational standards.

The second grant is an Arts For All Grant to provide artist residencies for students in second sixth grade at all of the district’s schools.

The $11,900 grant from the Los Angeles County Arts Education Collective, formerly Arts for All, will help to advance quantity, quality and equitable distribution of arts education across the district.

Instructional Services

Governing Board members are also expected to hear an Instructional Services End of Year Report from the 2016-17 school year.

The report includes information about curriculum connections, professional development, English Learners, instructional technology, computer science opportunities, categorical programs, assessments and accountability, the State Preschool Program and the After School Education and Safety Program (ASES).

In the upcoming school year, the district is expected to implement its new English Language Arts program called Benchmark Advance, focus on Designated and Integrated English Language Development and expanding NGSS/STEAM instruction.

The district is also expected to work with Apple Team, expand its support to students, partner with the College of the Canyons Science and Planetarium, expand its use of Google Classroom, add a Title One TOSA to support teachers, incorporate student technology standards, identify instructional materials for severe special education classes and build a stronger instructional team.

Assessment Ballot

The Governing Board is also recommending that its members vote no on the final assessment ballot from the city of Santa Clarita for the Landscape and Lighting District Zone 21 (Golden Valley Ranch).

According to the district, the assessment will cost the district $7,398 per year to pay for landscape and lighting related costs in the Golden Valley Ranch community.
