Traffic stop nets 2 arrests, seizure of drugs and firearm

The simple traffic stop of a car traveling through Newhall Tuesday netted two arrests and the alleged seizure of drugs, drug paraphernalia and a gun stolen in a case being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station made the stop on Tuesday shortly before 2:15 a.m.

“On Tuesday, August 8, 2017, in the early morning hours, patrol deputies conducted a traffic stop near 11th Street and Newhall Avenue in Newhall for a vehicle that had vehicle code violations,” Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s station said Wednesday.

“The passenger and driver were found to be in possession of a stolen firearm, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia,” she said.

The driver Guadalupe Albarran-Apolinar, 24, of Newhall and passenger, Jerry Montoya, identified as a 20-year-old Valencia transient were arrested on suspicion of; possession of a loaded, stolen firearm in public, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, possession of methamphetamine, being under the Influence of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

“It was determined that the passenger, Jerry Montoya, was on probation for Assault,” Miller said.

According to investigating Detective Jeff Burrow, the firearm was reported stolen out of LAPD in a 2010 case, she said.

Both men were taken into custody. Bail for Albarran-Apolinar was set at 60,000, and set at $35,000 for Montoya.
