California Highway Patrol officers are investigating the bizarre death of a man who was hit and killed by a truck on Interstate 5 Wednesday after he opened the passenger door of a moving car and got out while it was moving.

Ramon Santos, 35, was the passenger in a vehicle traveling southbound on I-5 just south of Roxford Street at about 40 to 50 miles per hour in the third lane from center.

“For a reason still under investigation, witnesses say Ramos unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the passenger side door and exited the vehicle while it was still in motion,” CHP Officer Josh Greengard said.

“After Ramos exited the vehicle he was struck by a semi tractor-trailer combination causing fatal injuries. Los Angeles County Fire Department pronounced Ramos deceased at 5:27 p.m.,” he said.

Next of kin notification was made at the scene by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Investigators are expected to reveal details about the fatality later today.

The investigation is being conducted by the Newhall Area CHP Office.

Anyone with information pertaining to this incident should contact the public relations officer at the Newhall Area CHP office at (661) 294-5540.
