Santa Clarita Valley resident Corby Segal said Monday that in all his years of caddying on the PGA Tour he’d never seen Riviera Country Club look as pristine as when he teed off that morning.

“It was perfect,” he said of being the day’s first group in the first round of the U.S. Amateur.

Even though he didn’t advance to Wednesday’s match play, Segal can hold on to that scene as a sacred memory.

Segal shot a 2-over 72 Tuesday at Bel-Air Country Club to put him at 8-over after two rounds, good for a share of 120th place.

The top 64 golfers advance to Wednesday.

Golden Valley High graduate Jonathan Kang shot a 10-over 80 Tuesday at Riviera to finish at 19-over through two rounds. He ended up with a share of 286th place, but likely gained valuable experience before his sophomore year at UC Irvine.

Kang birdied holes four and 11, but bogeyed 10 holes.

He shot a 9-over 79 on Monday at Bel-Air.

Segal shot a 6-over 76 on Monday at Riviera. He knew any hope of advancing through Tuesday rested on scoring two or three below par.

He bogeyed only holes 11 and 17, but the 18-year PGA Tour caddie didn’t shoot any birdies.

Segal currently works with golfer Brandon Hagy.

Segal tied for second at the U.S. Amateur qualifier at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale last month. Kang took first at the qualifier.

“This is just fun,” Segal said at the time. With little opportunity to practice because of work, he took that mindset into this week’s tournament.

“It was definitely fun to be out there playing Riviera near my home in Southern California,” he said.
