The National Foundation of Women Legislators (NFWL) and the Office Depot Foundation teamed up on Saturday to distribute backpacks to children of the community by way of a new backpack giveaway initiative.

With the help of high school volunteers and The Boys & Girls Club, the Old Town Newhall Library hosted the giveaway for children in grades K-3.

Councilwoman Marsha McLean, a member of the NFWL, took photos with community members and helped distribute the backpacks filled with pencils, crayons, and a coloring book.

Dozens of children and parents pose for a picture with Councilwoman Marsha McLean at a backpack giveaway event at the Old Town Newhall Library on Saturday, August 17, 2017.

“Sometimes if parents can’t afford to give their children the supplies that they need, it’s wonderful to be able to supply those children with those things,” said McLean. “I love kids of all ages, and I want all of them to be able to have what they need in order to enjoy school.”

Among the dozens of SCV residents who attended, was Marcus Klemp, along with his wife Carol and their son Paul.

Klemp was very happy with the event and that “the city looks to contribute to the community and let the people know that they support them and that they’re interested in their education.”
