The prequel film “The King’s Man” has been a long time coming. The film was originally slated for release in November 2019, but thanks to the Disney-Fox merger, several other big name titles with similar premiere dates, and of course, the Covid-19 pandemic, “The King’s Man” was pushed to a late 2021 release (via CBR). Almost two years later, “Kingsman” fans will finally be able to see the new film on December 22.

“The King’s Man” reveals the origins of the very first independent spy agency, Kingsman. Set during World War I, the film stars Ralph Fiennes as Lord Oxford with Harris Dickinson playing Oxford’s son Conrad, along with Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, Tom Hollander, and Rhys Ifans. The father-son duo are tasked with stopping a global catastrophe, plotted by some of the world’s most evil masterminds.

If you’re not quite ready to head to the theaters, you may be wondering when “The King’s Man” will be available to stream from the comfort of your own home. Don’t worry — we’ve got you covered.

The King’s Man Release Date

As for where you can stream the movie, there is sadly no streaming release that we know of at the moment. The movie is going to be a theater exclusive that premieres on Dec. 22, 2021, with showtimes beginning the evening of Dec. 21.

The movie is distributed by 20th Century Studios, so they will decide which streaming platform gets streaming rights. As soon as we learn more, we’ll let you know. Or first guess is HBO Max as this is where most big features go.

HBO Max is also home to several other 20th Century Studios projects and they recently agreed to a deal with the movie studio and Disney+. Again, we’ll update this post with details as soon as we learn more.

The King’s Man Cast and Crew

In 2015, a year dominated by spy movies, the one that stood out for its sheer originality and bold zaniness was Kingsman: The Secret Service – based on Mark Millar’s popular Icon Comics series – which spawned an even more bizarre sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, two years later. Co-writer and director Matthew Vaughn has returned for a third installment called The King’s Man, which will focus on the origins of the titular intelligence agency during the early 20th Century.

Of course, as is the case for most prequels, The King’s Man cast employs a whole new (and very exciting) ensemble, including two-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes. We shall start with him as we explore who is playing who (a phrase that may actually have more than one meaning in this case) in one of the most anticipated 2021 movies.

The King’s Man Review 2021?

Matthew Vaughn’s ‘The King’s Man,” a prequel to the filmmaker’s two entertainingly comic-book-y action-adventure spy-larks “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” is at once more bonkers and more staid than either of its predecessors (if a film that features a dancing, omnivorously bisexual, murderous Grigori Rasputin as one of its villains can be called staid).

Set against the backdrop of World War I and its origins, the film is essentially a trippier, more hallucinogenic version of an episode of “Drunk History” — one that might have been imagined (or dreamed) by a brainy but bored high-schooler who fell asleep during World History class after eating magic mushrooms, only to wake up with a crazy, what-if story involving several historical figures, minor and major, from the early 20th century rattling around in their head. That story, written by Vaughn and Karl Gajdusek, posits a revisionist theory about the causes of the global conflict, which only begins, in this case, with the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria (Ron Cook) by the Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip (Joel Basman).

In this telling, Princip is merely a pawn in a shadowy cabal of global criminals. That cabal includes the Russian monk Rasputin (Rhys Ifans), the Dutch spy Mata Hari (Valerie Pachner), Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin (August Diehl) and the Austrian mentalist Erik Jan Hanussen (Daniel Brühl), all doing the bidding of a puppet master from his secret mountaintop lair, whose identity is not revealed until the film’s climax. If the story is fun — and it is fitfully, only after a protracted, sloggy set up — it’s a lot less so than either of the first two films.
