Protect and Serve for about a dozen local sheriff’s deputies is expected to be more like protect and serve dinner as they participate in a fundraising effort for the Special Olympics.

The volunteering deputies – perhaps some ranking officers as well – are slated to take part Thursday in the annual Tip-A-Cop fundraiser at the Red Robin restaurant on McBean Parkway at Creekside Road during which deputies serve as hosts and servers between 5 and 9 p.m. Thursday.

“I think it’s a real win-win,” Special Olympics fundraising spokeswoman Laura Mayo told The Signal Monday.

“It’s a chance for cops to do something fun and rewarding and also a chance for the community to see them in a different light,” she said.

All money raised at the Tip-A-Cop event is to benefit local Special Olympics Southern California athletes.

Participating deputies are part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Southern California.

Proceeds from Thursday’s event are earmarked for Special Olympics Tri-Valley athletes, Mayo said, referring to athletes in areas that include the Santa Clarita Valley, Burbank, Glendale and Calabasas.

Another Tip-A-Cop event is slated to happen at Lazy Dog cafe Oct. 28.
