Question: Dear Robert, I enjoy reading the articles you write. There is a lot of information you’ve given that has helped. I have a question: Can I run a gas barbecue from my house gas line? I know that when a barbecue is purchased it can be “converted” to natural gas, but I don’t know what to do to get it connected to my home gas line. Are you able to guide me?   — MaryAnn B.  Answer: MaryAnn, yes this is possible. Question: I bought a home that I knew had a smoke smell but figured I could paint and make it go away. I painted the bedroom first, hoping to be able to move in and continue on over time. Unfortunately, the bedroom still is holding the smoke smell and now I’m at a loss. I already removed the carpet and padding, and am not sure what to do. Any ideas?   — Chuck P.  Answer: Chuck, there is a primer that is needed and, in my experience, is the only way to clear the air. Kilz is the brand and you can use the Restoration or original — both should do the trick.   Fully cover all painted surfaces with this, then follow up with fresh paint. Once this is done, if there is still a smell, check the insulation in the attic. Question: Hello, Robert. I’ve never written in but have used your advice on several occasions, saving quite a bit of money by executing tasks on my own. Thanks for the help! I’m wondering, is there a homeowner fix for an air conditioning compressor that is making noise above and beyond what it usually sounds like?   This just started a couple days ago, and I want to know if I can do something on my own in this case, also. Any guidance you have, I’d like to hear. Thanks a million.   — Richard K.  Answer: Richard, this is not something that even I, as a contractor, attempt to mess with. If the compressor is making noise, get a licensed and insured AC contractor out there ASAP, for an inspection.   As the temperatures continue to be high, those contractors tend to be stretched thin. I’d arrange sooner rather than later to have one out, and I’d also recommend shutting down the unit, on the chance that a repair could be made.  Potentially, if the issue is severe, continuing to use it could ruin it. Higher temps of course make it uncomfortable to not cool the home, but it could possibly save thousands of dollars if the unit is repairable. Best of luck.  Robert Lamoureux has more than 40 years of experience as a general contractor, with separate

Question: Good evening, Sir. What a great opportunity you provide to us readers, the ability to learn through your experience and sharing information, so that we have the confidence to try DIY. Thank you.   My question may have been answered previously, but I am a newer follower and not quite sure how to locate past information. With that said, I hope you are willing to cover the topic again, if it is a duplicate: There are columns outside my home, which are covered in brick. Unfortunately, some of the bricks have come loose and/or have fallen off.   Luckily, they are intact still, so can be reused. My problem, though, is not knowing the proper method to reinstall them properly, so that we aren’t dealing with this issue time and again. Are you able to help with this, please? Thank you so much.  — Eric J.  Answer: Eric, not a problem at all, just a bit of labor and materials for you. First, acquire quick-set mortar from a big box store. Take the loose and fallen bricks, clean them of all previous adhesives and soak them in water. Soaking them allows them to not absorb the new adhesive quite so fast.   Mix the quick-set per instructions and apply to the side of the brick that will be attached to the pillar. Allow these to dry, then add mortar in between the bricks, to finish off the job. This should take care of the problem; you may want to keep extra supplies on hand for future repairs. Best of luck.  Robert Lamoureux has more than 40 years of experience as a general contractor, with separate licenses

Question: Hi Robert, your article has helped us over the years, time and time again. Thank you for keeping this going. We look forward to reading it and learning new ways to help ourselves with our home. We’ve been able to save a considerable amount of money by learning through your article and then being brave, executing with your direction.   Today we have a question regarding flooring in a bathroom. We installed new flooring in most of our upstairs, using hard wood. We love that but know that bathrooms can be a problem with wood. Could we go with a faux wood in there, now that we are ready to replace the flooring? I know the Pergo-type flooring can have wood looks, we could get to a close match. What are your thoughts on this choice? Thanks for your help.  — Mary and Tom V.  Answer: Mary and Tom, Pergo is an option, though be sure to check on the height difference with your existing wood floor. Transitions can be installed — just make sure that the variance will not be a problem. This goes for all other material possibilities, too. As far as the Pergo itself, I personally prefer a tile product in a bathroom. I like that it is less temperamental with the moisture of a bathroom, and it is much more forgiving with that, in the event there is a leak.   If you were to choose tile as your option, I’d encourage you to go with a slightly textured option, to lessen the slip factor. Smooth tile can be extremely slippery when wet, so be sure to make your choice with this in mind. Best of luck.  Robert Lamoureux has more than 40 years of experience as a general contractor, with separate licenses in electrical and

Question: Robert, my backyard deck is off our upstairs master bedroom. It was an addition to our home before we bought it, roughly 15 years ago, which was 10 years after the home was built. The deck has what looks like paint on it, but it is almost like stucco, but less bumpy.   It looks to be in good condition and there are no leaks into our home that we know of, but I remember reading something from you in the past about decks needing to be sealed. Do we need to do something to our deck to prevent any issues in the future?  Like I said, it still looks good, but I don’t want any surprises down the road. Please advise what we can and should do.   And thank you, Robert, for the help you give.  — Joseph P.  Answer: Joseph, thank you for writng in. Yes, absolutely, decking surfaces should be maintained, just like anything else. These systems are generally urethane-based with an underlayment of texture for gripping, to prevent slipping.   I highly recommend that if you are not familiar with the system to contact an installer

Question: Hello Mr. Lamoureux, I saw you speak at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center a couple of years ago. I was hoping I could get your insight into our situation. Our home was built in 1982. We were thinking of redoing our windows and have received the following quotes:  • Marvin fiberglass windows, $85,000.  • Simonton retrofit vinyl windows, $22,000.  • Pelle retrofit vinyl windows, $24,500.  The first price is not in our budget. We could manage the retrofit windows, but, I have not read good things about them and I am concerned. Some of our windows do leak. The salesman (for the third quote), felt their retrofit windows would solve

Question: We have leaks from the roof where the vents are up in the attic. Looks like during rain and fierce winds, the water has gotten through the stucco and the water is coming through our patio covers and through our kitchen window, and our kitchen light has gotten a stain.  — Manny  Answer: Manny, the first thing to do is to water test to see where the water is entering, so that you don’t have to guess. Start below the leak and work your way up until you find the source. Question: Robert, thank you for everything you do to educate homeowners with repairs to their homes. In a recent article you mentioned that your 33-year-old roof finally needs repairs/replacement. I live in the Valencia area, and my house has a cement shingle roof. The roof is about 25 years old without any leaks. My question is what the average lifespan of this type of roof is. Also, would you suggest that I have the roof inspected this summer even though I do not have any leaks?  Thanks for your expertise.   — Steve C.  Answer: Steve, thank you for being a loyal reader of the Signal. It all depends on the type of roof that was installed. The one I was alluding to is a concrete roof, with the underlayment. The underlayment is what fails in these types of

Question: Good morning, Robert. I’ve read your articles for years but have never written in before. Time for me to, hopefully, get some help. In my home there are hardwood floors that are really old and beat up, fitting for the age of the structure.   Not much has been done to this home prior to our purchase a year ago and it shows, but this is our current issue: The laundry area is heavily damaged by water over the years. It is currently dry so it is not a water issue at this time, but we do need to tend to this floor. Is it possible to replace flooring to only one room? How would we do this and what is the best flooring to install in the place of this? Something more waterproof?   — Lynette L.  Answer: Lynette, this should be a relatively easy project, if you are interested in a DIY. Yes, flooring can be replaced in one room only, and you can, if you wish, go low-cost as a temp flooring until you are ready to do the rest of the area. Cutting the existing floor will likely be the most technical portion, as you will need to make a straight cut.   Be sure that the cut is made just under the center of the closed door. This position is so that the flooring in the opposing room is not visible. Remove the baseboards if they are present and begin lifting the flooring.
