Born in Valencia and raised in Saugus, Mandy Gonzalez, Saugus High School class of 1996, has made her way to New York and has made a name for herself on Broadway.
Gonzalez will take over the role of Angelica Schuyler Church in the Broadway hit “Hamilton” from Renée Elise Goldsberry, who won a 2016 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance. The role takeover takes place on September 6 at the Richard Rodgers Theater in Times Square, New York.
The daughter of Paul and Robin Gonzalez of Santa Clarita, Gonzalez has always wanted to perform. “Follow your dreams. This is something Mandy has always said,” says her proud father, Paul Gonzalez.
After high school, Gonzalez attended CalArts in Valencia. From there, she headed to New York and worked as a coat check attendant while attending open calls.
Having performed off Broadway and on Broadway, her credits include the role of Elphaba in “Wicked;” Nina Rosario in “In the Heights;” Sarah in “Dance of the Vampires” with Michael Crawford, Amneris in “Aida” with Toni Braxton, and “Eli’s Comin’,” a musical based on the music and lyrics of LauraNyro. In addition, she has toured as a backup singer with the Divine Bette Midler in the U.S. and Canada.
Not forgetting her Santa Clarita roots, Gonzalez returned in January 2016 with a group of the “Young Performers of America” and held a performance workshop at Valencia High School for Saugus and Valencia high school students. Gonzalez also serves as the Creative Director for the Young Performers of America.
“We are very proud of our daughter. We plan on visiting New York in October,” says Paul Gonzalez.
