Rosalind Wayman, the longtime senior field deputy for the Santa Clarita Valley under former county Supervisor Michael Antonovich, will be staying on in that role under the Fifth District’s new supervisor, Kathryn Barger, Wayman confirmed to The Signal on Wednesday.

Wayman had been Antonovich’s boots on the ground in Santa Clarita for 10 ½ years before Antonovich was termed-out after 36 years in office.

A Valencia resident, Wayman had worked throughout her tenure with Barger, who was Antonovich’s chief deputy for some 15 years before winning election herself to the Board of Supervisors last month.

“We had to be asked (to stay), and Kathryn asked,” Wayman said. “I’m excited. Kathryn brings a lot of new ideas.”

Barger herself has touted her expertise on healthcare, mental health and children’s issues.

Looking back, Wayman called Antonovich “a great friend to the Santa Clarita Valley.”

“He had a very large and broad impact on the Santa Clarita Valley,” she said. “He brought hundreds and hundreds of improvements to the valley, from trails to parks to pools to animal facilities.”

Wayman said Barger – the only Republican on the five-member Board of Supervisors — will be much the same.

“She’s already is a great friend of the valley,” Wayman said of her new boss. “She was the key person (in Antonovich’s office) to getting the (Santa Clarita Valley) new sheriff’s station.”

The station, still a work in progress, will be built on Golden Valley Road on the current location of Fire Station 104. It will replace the current sheriff’s facility on Magic Mountain Parkway, which was built in 1972 and has become antiquated as the city’s population has grown.

Barger, said Wayman, “has been working behind the scenes for a long time.”
