An elderly woman suffered chest pains during a Saugus house fire that destroyed a room over the home’s garage late Monday afternoon.
Flames and heavy smoke were seen coming from the garage of a house on the 23000 block of Cerca Drive in Saugus shortly after 5:30 p.m., Supervisor Cheryl Sims of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.
“We had one patient,” she said.
Sgt. Brian Allen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station told The Signal: “We had an elderly woman complain of respiratory discomfort.”
Paramedics were dispatched to the fire at 5:33 p.m., on Cerca Drive between Vista Encantada Drive and Palacete Drive, north of Bouquet Canyon Road and west of Seco Canyon Road.
The fire was reported to have started in a “roof flat” over the home’s garage, Sims said, describing the structure as a one-story single family dwelling.
About 6 p.m., the roof collapsed into the garage, one witness to the firefighting efforts said.
Several residents watched firefighters from four SCV fire stations work to control the fire, with flames and smoke visible for a couple of blocks.
A heavy cloud cover over the Santa Clarita Valley appeared to trap heavy smoke emanating from the burning house.
