Following in the same tradition they’ve held for the last five decades, the Xi Nu Zeta sorority is once again hosting their annual lasagna dinner scholarship fundraiser at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Saturday.

“There’s only 16 members now, but we’re still able to feed over 200 people each time we do this,” said Evie Lesley, one of the Xi Nu Zeta sisters and an event organizer, who added that this year they expect a similar turnout as they have in years past. “It’s quite a project.”

Xi Nu Zeta, a group of women in the Santa Clarita Valley that consists of retired women who were everything from school teachers to nurses to small business owners, holds the fundraiser annually at the Newhall parish in order to raise money for the Santa Clarita Valley Scholarship Foundation.

“For instance, last year our scholarship money went to a young man who was a Hart High School student working three part-time jobs to support his family,” said Vivian Wightman, another sorority sister and event organizer. “Each year, this event raises about $5,000.”

For $40 a head and with doors opening at 6 p.m., those in attendance will have their choice of homemade lasagna, salad, beer, wine and dessert.

“Some Hart High School students will be providing entertainment as well,” said Lesley.

In addition to the profits raised from tickets going to the nonprofit’s fund for scholarships, there will be a silent auction, and the proceeds will also be given to the Xi Nu Zeta sorority. In years past, bidders have won baskets containing free spa treatments, tickets to the zoo and hair salon appointments.

Those wishing to attend the event can purchase tickets at the door, with dinner being served at 7 p.m. Our Lady of Perpetual Help is located at 23233 Lyons Ave.
