Los Angeles County officials confirmed the death of Stephen S. Winkler, a former Saugus Union School District board member who was voted off the governing board in 2013. He was 67.
Winkler reportedly died April 1 in a medical facility, although county officials were not able to confirm the location or cause of death at this time due to policy.
In June 2013, members of the governing board for the Saugus Union School District board voted 4-1 to declare Winkler’s board seat vacant, claiming he didn’t reside within the school district boundaries.
Winkler’s residency status had been the result of a months-long investigation by the district to determine whether he lived at an address on Rio Prado Drive in Valencia, as he claimed, or at an address in Sylmar, where he admitted to renting a room.
He also was censured by fellow board members the week before he was expelled from the governing board, after his social media postings drew community-wide attention.
Winkler was elected to the governing board in 2011.
