A Castaic man was arrested on suspicion of arson Thursday after a sergeant from the Pitchess Detention Center allegedly spotted a man trying to set a rag on fire.

About noon, a sergeant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was driving along Lake Hughes Road, where he saw a man trying to light a fire, said Lt. Jim Royal of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“A transient was arrested for lighting a rag on fire,” he said. “He was spotted by one of our (sergeants) from the Pitchess Detention Center while driving.”

The small fire was quickly extinguished.

No call was made to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, fire officials said.
