The School of Visual and Performing Arts at College of the Canyons is inviting community members to enjoy its lineup of music and dance performances in May.

The annual Pops! concert kicks off the month of entertainment with the award-winning COC Studio Jazz Ensemble and Lab Band. Audiences can expect to hear familiar tunes, such as “September” by Earth, Wind, & Fire and “Wipe Out,” by The Surfaris, performed with a jazz flair, school officials said in a news release.

The one-time performance is happening at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the Performing Arts Center’s main stage. General admission tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children and seniors.

The following week’s performance will be the concert Giggle, Smile and Dance, which will be delivered by dance students, guests and faculty in the PAC, as well, according to the news release. Tickets for one of the 8 p.m. showings on Thursday, May 16, and Friday, May 17, are $12 for adults and $6 for children and seniors.

Those who are looking to hear live student performances of music made popular by chart-toppers like Pat Benatar, Queen, Heart, Stevie Wonder, The Allman Brothers Band, Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran and The Staples Singers can head to the COC music department’s Commercial Music Recital, which will feature a selection of songs spanning the genres of rock, pop, country, funk and soul and performed by the Pops ensemble band Cover Charge.

You can catch the show at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, for free at the Black Box Theatre, according to the release. Seating is limited.

One of the final events of the semester is the Chancellor’s Cabaret event, which will include a special spring fever and vocal jazz performance in the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center.

“Come hear the fabulous music of award-winning student vocal groups Just Jazz and House Blend at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 24,” the news release states. Admission is $20 for adults and $15 for children and seniors. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door.

The Electronica Musique and Multimedia Concert will close out the month of May with dance, lights and lots of energy, school leaders said. Under the direction of composer Bernardo Feldman, 12 up-and-coming student composers, DJs and producers from the college will blend acoustic musical instruments with computer-generated sounds at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, in the Black Box Theatre. Admission is free, but seating is limited.

For more information or to purchase tickets for any of the upcoming performances, school officials said to contact the PAC box office at 661-362-5304 or visit the PAC website.
