Coroner identifies man found dead at nature center

Medical examiners identified the body of a man found deceased at the Placerita Canyon Nature Center on Wednesday.

John Porter, 63, of Santa Clarita, was found dead in a vehicle at the nature center, according to Lt. Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

“Our detectives are barely arriving there now,” Officer B. Carbajal, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Homicide Bureau said shortly before 7:30 p.m.

Relatives of Porter filed a missing persons report with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, according to station officials.

“His family reported him missing and we found him deceased,” according to Lt. Ignacio Somoano of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Somoano said a formal missing persons report was filed between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday.

“He was discovered at 6:30 p.m.,” he said.

Medical examiners have not yet released the cause of death; an official determination is pending their investigation.

More information is expected to be released later.
